Fuel Dispenser Security Breach – How Fuel is Being Stolen From Your Gas Station

Just a quick heads up for everyone. If your station has fuel dispensers that are fairly new (less than 7-8 years old), chances are you have a system installed in your dispensers where technicians can turn the pump ON just by using a remote control device and pump fuel. Well, the system was designed to help certified technicians to be able to work on dispensers more easily without going inside the store to get the pump “authorized” to dispense fuel for testing purposes.

The way it works is there is a set 4 digit code for most common dispenses like Gilbarco and Wayne that most certified technicians know, and they only use that code to work on the dispensers.

Recently some people found a way to get their hands on these so call “remote control” devices and they are going around different stations at night and pumping out fuel.

I recently had a local technician to come to all our stations and turn off the remote fueling option. According to him it can be easily done by changing a “jumper” setting on the board, which he did and now I am feeling little at ease knowing no one is going to pump fuel out of our stations at night.

If you have a vendor or technician that you call for all your dispenser repair work, do call and ask them if your dispensers are equipped with such system, if so tell them to turn that option off.

In the meantime match your daily fuel sales gallon with your tank monitoring device report, if you do not have a tank monitoring device, then take manual stick readings of all tanks and match it with your daily sales.

I found a story where this has happened to a store owner in Texas, here is a link to that story..
